Assignments, Tests, and Learning Online

First, please be patient as this transition happens. This is new territory for everyone, and it may take some time to find the "new normal."

Your professor will provide guidance on office hours and others methods of communication. You may also email them with questions.

Faculty teaching "live" courses through Zoom or other technologies have been asked to record their lectures and make them available in Blackboard to accommodate students unable to attend the "live" sessions. If you are unable to attend the live streaming course lectures, you should review the archived lectures in a timely manner.

A chat box feature for academic support is also available on that webpage. Alternatively, you can contact our Learning Center at learningcenter@dos5.net with any questions.

Familiarize yourself with Zoom, Blackboard and other technologies that will be used in your courses. The Learning Center is hosting help sessions to assist students preparing for this transition. Support specific to the online learning environment is also available.

Your professor will provide guidance on course materials and testing options. You may email them with questions.

If you have testing accommodations through the Office of Educational Accessibility, please contact oeatests@dos5.net for direct assistance. Please include all pertinent details of your question or concern.

There are no plans to extend the spring semester. On-campus final exams are typically offered in a three-hour time frame. This semester the final exams will follow the distance learning exam policy, which provides students a wider window within which they can take their exams.

We recognize that some Monarchs may face issues with WiFi and technology. Communicate this to your professor. Check your course syllabus for their contact information or search the directory at http://5yz.dos5.net/directory

Also, ODU Cares has compiled a list of various internet provider resources below.

  • FCC agreement: Providers will waive late fees, provide open hot-spots and will not disconnect service for lack of payment.

  • Connect2Compete program.: Limited-time, first two months free of Connect2Compete service, $9.95/month thereafter

  • Comcast COVID-19 response: Offering free WiFi for two months to K-12 and higher education students. All Xfinity hot-spots are free to the public during this time.

  • AT&T COVID-19 response: Offering open hot-spots, unlimited data to existing customers, and $10/month plans to low-income families.

  • Verizon COVID-19 response: Offering free international calling to most countries. Customers should call to receive temporary plan upgrades, including data options.

  • Sprint COVID-19 response: Offering unlimited data to existing customers and allowing all handsets to enable hot-spots for 60 days at no extra charge.

  • T-Mobile COVID-19 response: Offering unlimited data to existing customers, and, coming soon, will allow all handsets to enable hot-spots for 60 days at no extra charge.

  • Charter Free Internet offer for 2 months: Offering free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription and at any service level up to 100 Mbps. To enroll call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households.

  • Schools, community centers, churches, and libraries: Many community organizations and government facilities offer open WiFi, and it can often be accessed from the parking lot.

Tutoring and Academic Support

ODU offers a variety of services. Tutoring Central shows you all of the services. On-campus students have access to online tutoring via tutor.com. Log into your tutor.com supported course and access the link via the menu. Directions are available here.

ODU Global Students: You’ll have access to tutoring via BrainFuse, a new online tutoring platform available to all students taking classes through ODUGlobal. This service is located within your canvas course.

The Science Tutoring Centers offer free in-person and online tutoring by appointment or drop-in. Check the website for additional resources and locations.

Academic mentoring appointments are available in-person and online through the office of Academic Innovation and Learning Support.  Appointments can be made via the my.dos5.net portal or by contacting the office directly. Visit the webpage for hours and to schedule an appointment.

We offer the following support online:

  • Individual Tutoring: Make an appointment through WC Online, which you can access by selecting "Schedule an Appointment."
     
  • Video Feedback: If you don't have time for an appointment, reserve time on a tutor's schedule to review your ePortfolio and create a video by selecting "Request Video eP Support"
     
  • Open Studio Hours: Work on your ePortfolio with help from the ePortfolio team without an appointment every Tuesday 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. & Wednesday 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. To join online use http://bit.ly/epopenstudio
     
  • Tutorials: These short guides walk users through various actions. If the tutorial you need isn't available, email eportfolio@dos5.net. We will create and share a written tutorial or video tutorial with you.
     
  • Chat Support: The ePortfolio Assistants are available to answer questions using the ODUeportfolio Slack. This is a free messaging platform.

While the ePortfolio team's primary focus is helping students create and develop ePortfolios, they are also provided support for related digital assignments. We help students navigate a variety of digital tools (video, audio, image editing, etc.) or work with as student to troubleshoot issues in platforms (Blackboard, Zoom, etc). A student can seek help using the same resources we provide for ePortfolio questions:
